Art Methods Class 2012

For an introduction activity, our class made footprints to introduce ourselves.  We used different types of materials to complete the activity.  During class, we stood up in front of the class and described our footprint.  My footprint is shown above!
The picture in the right hand corner is of my fiance' and I.  We will be getting married next February!  The barn is a symbol of where I grew up; a farm in Northeastern South Dakota.  I also have a candy wrapper of Mike and Ike's because they are one of my favorite candies!  The bow is used to describe one of my favorite holidays--Christmas!
For this activity, we had to include three different mediums as well as our name.  The three mediums I used were markers, candy wrapper, the bow, a picture, and tissue paper for the straw out of the barn!  For an extension activity, you could have students bring a brown paper bag with 3 items that describe them.  They would then get up in front of the class and describe those items.  You could also have a partner try and guess who it was by the items in the brown paper bag!

Vincent Van Gogh Fingerpainting Project
For this activity, we first viewed a powerpoint about Vincent Van gogh and became more familiar with him and his art.  After the discussion, we took a sheet of white paper, and taped it down.  We were to recreate or make our own version of the "Starry Night" painting.  For this activity, we had to have swirls in our painting that were similiar to what  Van Gogh used in his paintings.  We needed three components which included the foreground, middle ground, and back ground.   We also had to include shades and tints in the activity.
My fingerpainting is shown below.  Instead of recreating the "Starry Night", I decided to create my own painting by using Van Gogh's techniques. An extension activity would be to have the students create their own Van Gogh creation, and then another painting/drawing from another artist and compare and contrast the two artists.  Depending on the age, you could do more or less artists.

Project 2: Vincent Van Gogh
Another project relating to Van Gogh was a tissue paper collage.  The main objective of this project was to create a background with different swirls and shapes which is similar to Van Gogh's painting style.  We used tissue paper and oil pasels to create this.  My picture is shown below.
An extension activity that could be done in the classroom would be to use different media. Instead of using black construction paper to create the buildings, they could use fabric, or bring different items from home.
